starting blocks and starting waves

Thousands of participants will be at the starting line on Sunday, May 31. That is why we are asking for extra attention to be paid to the start procedure.

GETTING STARTED IN WAVES

During the HiPRO Utrecht Marathon, we use start waves. You will be assigned to a starting zone. All runners from your starting zone will cross the starting line in a “start wave.” A start wave lasts approximately 10 minutes. The time indicated is the time it takes for the first through the last runner in that wave to cross the starting line.

Are you at the front of the pack? If so, you’ll cross the starting line a few minutes earlier than the participants at the back of the pack. All races use a rolling start.

The start waves open 15 minutes before the start of each wave.

ASSIGNED STARTING WAVE

Thousands of participants will be at the starting line on Sunday, May 31. That’s why we’re asking for extra attention regarding the start procedure. It’s important to start in the wave that matches the finish time you submitted. You’ve received your assigned start wave via email.

Your race number will indicate your assigned start wave. The start waves are organized based on the estimated finish time you provided. It is not possible to switch to an earlier start wave. However, you are allowed to start in a later start wave.

Is there time registration?

There is an electronic chip (Tag) and a plastic spacer on the back of your starting number (Bib). BibTag makes registering your times very easy, all you have to do is wear your starting number correctly.

Information to ensure good time registration:

  • Wear your starting number visibly on your chest. Do not cover the bib number with a jacket or with your hands while passing the mats at the start and finish line. These mats receive the signal from your BibTag (also pay attention to pressing your own stopwatch on the start and finish line).
  • Do not fold or wrinkle the bib number. Certainly not where the Tag is.
  • Use four pins on the corners of the starting number, do not pierce the Tag.
  • Do not remove the plastic spacer.

The Tags do not have to be taken back after the race, you can keep the bib number (with Tag) as a souvenir or throw it away with the normal waste (plastic).

What is the official result?
The official result is based on the gross time, which starts when the starting shot is fired and stops when the runner crosses the finish line.
The results also show your net time, which is your personal finish time. The net time is the time that starts when you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line.

Where are the toilets located?
Restrooms are available at the start, along the course, at every aid station, and at the finish line.

Running safely and responsibly

Failing to replenish fluids lost through sweating during endurance sports can lead to a decline in performance. Insufficient fluid intake can ultimately lead to health problems. Many athletes seem unaware that not only drinking too little, but also drinking too much, can pose a health risk. Maintaining the proper balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body is therefore particularly important.

While running, the body loses fluids and electrolytes through sweating and breathing. These are essential processes for maintaining a stable body temperature. Failure to replenish this fluid loss in a timely manner and in the correct amounts can lead to dehydration (from drinking too little) or hyponatremia (from drinking too much, resulting in a salt deficiency). This can affect your performance, as well as your physical and mental condition.

Replenishing fluids and electrolytes to an optimal level is highly individual and depends on factors such as weather conditions, the intensity and pace of your run, and personal characteristics such as fitness level, body weight, and choice of clothing.

Athletes have a personal responsibility in this regard. Drinking the right amount is a combination of knowing your own body and the way you’re used to drinking during workouts.
